What My Grandmothers Taught Me

Learning from the Women in Matthew’s Genealogy of Jesus
Family stories shape our sense of identity. Matthew begins his Gospel with a list of Jesus’ ancestors. The list contains some rather unusual women—Jesus’ grandmothers. Why are these women in this list and what does their inclusion have to say about the coming Messiah? What might Matthew be teaching us through their stories?

THIS WILL NOT BE YOUR GRANDMOTHERS BIBLE STUDY!
We will be making things like a family tree, a quilt runner, granny squares, door stops, bread—things grandmothers made. Yes, we will learn about the Biblical stories of the grandmothers in Jesus’ family tree, and about how to lead a study. But we may also glean, like Ruth. Our leader, Jane DeFord plans to bring the study to life by using all of our senses and learning styles.
Jane DeFord lives in Downingtown, PA with her husband Nash and is a retired pastor from Donegal Presbytery. The later years of her ministry concentrated on interim/transitional ministry. Jane has served as Moderator of the presbytery and active on COM for many years. She continued to be active in PW serving in the local church as study leader and later served the Synod of the Trinity as the representative to the Board of Directors. Jane’s participation in the Global Exchange to India served to reshape her ministry resulting in her participation in the UN Commission on the Status of Women in 2012. Retirement in this year of Covid has proved to be a bit too quiet. She is certain that future years will be more active!
The full program begins at 4pm on FRIDAY and ends after worship on SUNDAY. Registration and check-in will start on Friday at 3:00 PM. Cost covers 5 meals, a single room in either Gilmor Sloane House or Maple Lodge, and a program fee of $40, which includes a copy of the study.
