Who is the foreigner? Who is the native? What is it like to be “the other”? These are the questions to be explored at our Gathering. Based on the scripture Ephesians, Chapter 2: 7-21 “…you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household…” a diverse group of speakers, panelists and workshop leaders will highlight migration, immigration and cultural diversity. Our goal and hope is that all the attendees will have a renewed commitment to deal with others in love and understanding. This is an especially meaningful theme for us as our Synod is the most culturally diverse in PC(USA).
We are particularly thrilled to announce that the Rev. Larissa Kwong Abazia, past-Vice Moderator of the General Assembly, PCUSA and Carol Winkler, PW Churchwide Moderator will be our keynote speakers.
One part of the program is an Immigration and Diversity Forum. Panelists will include Rev. Sandy Damhof, a University Chaplain who has taken a group of students to the US/ Mexico Border, Carole Hsu, a journalist, Rev. Katie Mulligan, an inner city youth pastor and Jacinth Hanson the Moderator elect from the Synod of the Northeast. The Gathering will conclude with communion worship being led by Rev. Shannon R. Vance-Ocampo, Interim Presbyter of Albany.
Under the leadership of our Vice Moderator and the Design Team Chair, Su-Ling Lai some innovations are being implemented for this Triennial. The length has been reduced from three to two days, resulting in the need to stay over just one night. Plans are being made to make meals optional for the commuters so that attending the Gathering can be less expensive for the commuters.
The Design Team has worked very hard to make our Triennial Gathering one that will bring the participants closer to peace, love and understanding within our “Household of Faith.”
